By the Sea was made from a new art print, © 1990 which was a reprint of an antique art print (late 1800's or early 1900's). An older gentleman dressed in fine attire, wearing brown pants, black boots, a nice yellow overcoat with flower pinned to the pocket, and white top hat is standing by the sea enjoying a smoke on the pipe!

The print has been mounted with acid-free adhesive. The puzzle measures approx 9 1/4" X 15 1/2". There is an average of 3.2 pieces per square inch. Puzzle has been cut from 1/4" 5-ply Finland Birch using blades with a thickness of just 0.010.

As shown above, puzzle has an irregular edge, including "waves" on both sides of the water, and two figurals up at top, which protrude out from the puzzle and compliment this seaside scene nicely.

(signed, numbered, and dated on the back)

Two of the figurals (Seagull and Trout) are protruding figurals and two others are complex figurals.

This puzzle was cut in Knobby Style Cut - There are also many earlets throughout. As noted above, there are 3.2 pieces per square inch; pieces are quite small compared to many of my previous puzzles which averaged about 2.2 ppsi. This, combined with the extensive color-line cutting, and the irregular edge, is going to increase the difficulty of the puzzle quite a bit.

Shown below is the back of the puzzle, to illustrate how the pieces fit together. It is highly interlocking except for around the parts that are color-line cut, and the figurals.

Puzzle comes disassembled inside the beautiful wood box with hinged lid shown below. I purchased this box new and finished the outside with stain and varnish. I believe this is basswood. My label is affixed to the inside of the lid with the puzzle title, number, and piece count. The box measures 8 1/2" X 5 1/4" X 3 1/2" high.

Note: This puzzle contains small pieces which may present a choking hazard to children. It has been designed for adults or older children and is not meant for young children.
