Ship
at Sea was made from a vintage art
print which I purchased at auction. This is an
actual print from the 1930's and not a new
reproduction. (This is the 2nd of three 1930's
art prints I purchased in one lot; the first I
cut was Wagon Train, puzzle #30.) This
painting is gorgeous. I didn't find a signature
of the artist. Please note that the picture
directly below was taken by a digital camera
while the 2nd picture down is an actual scan. I
believe the actual scan most accurately
represents the colors in this puzzle. The detail
of the sailboat is wonderful. The print has been
mounted with acid-free adhesive. The puzzle
measures 11 7/8" X 15 7/8".
There is an average of 1.3 pieces per square
inch. Puzzle has been cut from 1/4" 5-ply
Baltic Birch using blades with a thickness of 0.011
Actual scan, below, shows true colors of puzzle
best.
I wish I could have gotten the whole puzzle
scanned, but it was much too large.
This puzzle was
cut in Long Arm Style. It is highly
interlocking and you should be able to pick up
the entire puzzle without it falling apart. The
only figural in this puzzle is my "Key"
signature piece (signed, numbered, and dated on
the back)
The scan below is the reverse
side, showing only about 1/6 of the whole puzzle:
Selection of
pieces at random (backside):
The picture
below was taken as I was disassembling it for
counting!
It is my guess that this is going to be quite difficult
to put together!
Definitely not for beginners! (Like myself-
the thought of putting this together is
frightening)
Additional
Notes: This puzzle turned out extremely
well. I am starting to think that I do my best long
arm style cut when the pieces are larger,
such as this puzzle at 1.3 ppsi, as
noted above. While I am able to cut smaller
pieces (1.9 ppsi in puzzle #29 for
example), I think larger pieces enable more
variety, and are nicer to look at. Out of all the
long arm puzzles I have cut so far (the
4 others before this one total 903 pieces), this
is my favorite one.
Puzzle comes disassembled inside
the beautiful wood box with sliding
lid shown below. I made this box myself from solid
pine (sides) and 3-ply Finland
Birch (lid and bottom). The outside has been
finished with stain and multiple layers of sealer.
My label is affixed to the outside of the box
with the puzzle title, number, and piece count.
There are also several layers of sealer over the
label so it will not come off; it is embedded
inside the layers of finish. The box measures
approx 5 3/4" X 8 1/2" X 5 1/2"
high.
Note:
This puzzle contains small pieces which may
present a choking hazard to children. It has been
designed for adults or older children and is
not meant for young children.
