The
Nosegay was made from a vintage
antique label- a beautiful tobacco label- which I
purchased at auction. This is an original extra
large tobacco label from the 1880s and not
a new reproduction. That's right- this label is
around 120 years old! Just look at the wonderful
color, the beautiful lady, her fine dress and all
the flowers that adorn this picture, including
her nosegay, or, bouquet. This will be very fun
to work.
This vintage label has been
mounted with acid-free adhesive and sealed with
acrylic sealer. On the bottom right corner,
beaneath the picture on this label, there was
very fine print which I trimmed off because it
occurred outside the border; it was hard to read
but I believe it said "N Hohen & Co
Richmond, VA." Of course, the text that does
occur on the puzzle can be seen in photos below...
It reads: The Nosegay (at the top) and
then The American Tobacco Co, successors to T.
C. Williams Co. of Richmond, VA. (at the
bottom). The puzzle is rectangular and measures 6
3/8" X 12 1/2" There is an
average of 1.9 pieces per square inch. Puzzle
has been cut from 1/4" 5-ply Finland Birch
using the finest blades available with a
thickness of just 0.008!
There are no
other figurals besides my "Key"
signature piece (signed, numbered & dated
on the back).
The corners are
trick corners, meaning it is not real obvious at
first which pieces are the corner pieces. All the
pieces in this puzzle are done in my usual irregular
knobby style. This puzzle is highly
interlocking.
Puzzle comes with the beautiful wood box
with hinged lid shown below. I purchased
this box new, stained the outside and gave it
three coats of varnish. The inside is left
unfinished. I believe this is basswood. My label
is affixed to the inside of the lid with the
puzzle title, number, and piece count. The box
measures 6 1/2" X 4 1/4" X 4" high.
This is a wonderful box to hold this particular
puzzle because it resembles an old treasure chest..
Note:
This puzzle contains small pieces which may
present a choking hazard to children. It has been
designed for adults or older children and is
not meant for young children.
